FALLING FOR CHRISTMAS
The filmmakers have decided to take a politically correct approach in the scenes regarding their alleged homosexual identity. SWEET HOME ALABAMA stars Reese Witherspoon as Melanie Carmichael, a New York fashion designer who finds herself engaged to Andrew, the son of the city’s glamorous female mayor. Not only has Melanie lied about her last name, she’s also lied about her working class parents. To top it off, Melanie’s still married to Jake, with whom she had a big argument before leaving. After pushing her daughter into beauty pageants for years, the extravagant engagement ring from Tiffany’s showroom seems like adequate payoff. But her father Earl , who spends his days reenacting Civil War battles for camera-wielding tourists, worries that his only child is running away from her past. Witherspoon celebrated the 20th anniversary of their movie in September with some fan-favorite scenes and a heartfelt tribute. "Twenty years ago, Sweet Home Alabama came out and completely changed my life," she wrote in the caption.
"Carving out that piece of her life isn't so easy for her. I don't have the same responsibilities or time constraints, so I hope that she could find time to do it. I'll be there tomorrow." Although centered in a fictional version of the town of Pigeon Creek, near a fictional version of Greenville, Alabama, the film was mostly shot in Georgia. The Carmichael Plantation, which Melanie tells the reporter is her childhood home, is the Oak Hill Berry Museum, a historic landmark in Georgia which is near the campus of Berry College in Rome, Georgia. At the time, it had the highest September opening weekend, surpassing Rush Hour. For a decade, the film would hold this record until 2012 when Hotel Transylvania took it. Parents need to know that this CMT series plays a lot cleaner than other reality dating shows, thanks in part to the show's focus on "Southern" morality. Language and sexual content are extremely light, but there is violence in the form of brawling between contestants that produces a little blood. You'll also see social drinking -- and lots of stereotyping.
Without her, even the enticing premise and an exceptionally able supporting cast would sink under the weight of a plot that somehow manages to be both predictable and disjointed. The movie spends too much time reuniting Melanie with people from her past. It also spends much too much time introducing us to all kinds of adorable cracker stereotypes, and on a tired plot twist about Melanie's exaggeration of her family's social standing.
But home starts to tug at her heartstrings, and what she thought she wanted may not be what she wants at all. Armed again with divorce papers, Melanie heads for Pigeon Creek, Alabama. There, she confronts the man who’s been avoiding her request for the past seven years.
With a reported budget of US$30 million, it was a box office hit, despite the mixed reviews. The streets and storefronts of Crawfordville, Georgia, were used as the backdrop for the Catfish Festival and other downtown scenes. The coonhound cemetery was on Moore Street in Crawfordville and the bar was located at Heavy's Barbecue near the town. Glass that forms when lightning hits sand, as in the film, is called fulgurite. SWEET HOME ALABAMA also contains a significant amount of foul language.
